Stop Illegal Deportations!

To: Sen. Sanders, Rep. Balint, Sen. Welch

From: A constituent in Montpelier, VT

April 10

The Trump administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport over 100 Venezuelans to a prison in El Salvador is an alarming overreach of executive power. While the Supreme Court's ruling allows these deportations to resume for now, it also affirms the legal right for detained migrants to receive proper notice and an opportunity to challenge their removal before being deported. This is a vital due process protection. The Alien Enemies Act dates back to 1798 and was intended for wartime situations, not as a tool for mass deportations of immigrants already residing in the United States. Attempting to use this archaic law to circumvent modern immigration procedures sets a dangerous precedent that threatens core American values of justice and human rights. I urge you to take immediate action to stop these illegal deportations and ensure detained Venezuelans have full access to fair judicial review as required by the Supreme Court's decision. Deporting vulnerable migrants to a prison under the guise of this obsolete wartime act is an unacceptable violation of their civil liberties. We must uphold the rule of law and protect the human rights of all people within our borders.
