An Open Letter

October 7

I am writing to express my growing concern about the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) and the glaring lack of oversight that threatens to undermine critical aspects of our society. As AI continues to evolve at breakneck speed, its potential impacts on our democracy, economy, and civil liberties are becoming increasingly evident. Yet, our regulatory framework has fallen woefully behind. It is imperative that Congress take immediate and decisive action to address these challenges before they spiral out of control. I urge you to push for the creation of a dedicated branch within the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tasked specifically with monitoring AI development and deployment. This new branch should be empowered to hire independent committees of experts to investigate the many dangers AI poses, including algorithmic bias, manipulation of elections, and distortion of our free markets. Without immediate intervention, we risk enabling AI systems that perpetuate systemic inequalities, influence political outcomes, and distort market competition. This is not just a matter of technical oversight, but of safeguarding the very principles upon which our democracy and free economy are built. We cannot afford to wait for these technologies to mature while the consequences of their unchecked growth are already being felt. In addition to the urgent need for AI regulation, the government must also address the mounting issue of intellectual property (IP) violations fueled by AI technologies. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as other IP agencies, have failed to keep pace with the technological advances that are rapidly generating vast amounts of content, much of it in direct violation of copyright laws. The federal government must overhaul its approach to intellectual property in the AI era, ensuring that creators, artists, and inventors are protected from wholesale exploitation of their work by AI systems. The speed at which AI is advancing demands a response that is equally swift. If we continue to lag behind, the consequences for our democracy, economy, and culture could be severe and irreversible. We need bold leadership now, and I urge you to be at the forefront of this critical effort to protect our nation’s future. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response and hope that you will champion the necessary regulatory changes to address the challenges posed by AI.
