Stop violations of free speech

To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Markey, Rep. Moulton, Sen. Warren

June 12

The forcible removal of Senator Alex Padilla from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference for simply attempting to ask a question is a disturbing violation of free speech and democratic norms. Padilla, as an elected representative, has every right to question administration officials about their policies and actions. The aggressive manner in which he was manhandled, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed for no justifiable reason is an egregious abuse of power that cannot be tolerated in a free society. This incident is symptomatic of the escalating crackdown on dissent and criticism by the Trump administration when it comes to immigration enforcement. From the arrests of local officials to threats against governors and mayors, there is a clear pattern of intimidation and suppression of those who dare to challenge the administration's draconian policies. Such authoritarian behavior undermines the fundamental principles of democracy and accountability. It is imperative that there be a thorough investigation into this incident and that those responsible for the mistreatment of Senator Padilla face appropriate consequences. The administration must uphold the First Amendment rights of all citizens, including elected officials, to freely express their views and hold those in power accountable without fear of retaliation or violence. Failing to do so would further erode the foundations of our democratic system and set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.
