Cuba has been under the thumb of the United States for too long. Cuba is a sovereign nation that should not be bullied, sanctioned, or embargoed by our country because of our desire for their resources. Mexico, Venezuela, and any other country should be able to send fuel and aid freely as well as to trade openly with the people and government of Cuba. Cuba has contributed so much to the world of medicine and humanitarian efforts in countries around the world.
Our undermining of Cuba’s rights as a nation and their sovereignty not only hurts working people in Cuba, but also the people who would benefit from trade, travel, and cultural exchange with the Cuban people and the world. More importantly, it paints the United States as an authoritarian regime that not only ignores the will of its people, but ignores the humanity of regular people in the countries we selfishly bully for economic control.
This 60+ year embargo has been an embarrassment to our country and a weakening of democracy in our region. When the US talks about democracy on the world stage our actions in Cuba, Venezuela, El Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua, Chile, and so many other nations we have actively undermined, paint us as authoritarian, savage, resource hungry, and uncaring of the people our actions effect most.
Please stand up to this political moment and support Cuba’s’ sovereignty by lifting sanctions, the embargo, and travel bans, so that people can get resources to the Cuban people that they desperately need.
