The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in immense suffering for so many people — though Israel’s horrendously inhumane treatment of Palestinian civilians has been particularly egregious.
The U.N. Security Council recently proposed a plan that could plausibly bring an end to the horrors that have been perpetrated against Gazan families over the past year. Rather than take a leading role in facilitating a peace, the United States vetoed this resolution and will continue to enable Israel’s war crimes.
I find our actions to be despicable and shameful.
Demanding concessions from Hamas before calling for an end to Israel’s abuses is tantamount to sanctioning their actions — and ultimately makes us complicit in the overt abuse of the Palestinian people and Israel’s crime against humanity.
As a leader on the global stage, we must show the moral courage to uphold the most basic principles of human rights and protect oppressed purposes wherever we can. Sadly, we’re doing no such thing.
We can do better and we should.
